In November 2009, the owners of The Melting Pot Restaurants had a vision to create a modern fast-casual burger restaurant that offered a unique variety of high-quality food in a hip environment with lasting appetite appeal to people of all ages. After all, burgers are and will always be an American passion.
Since the dawn of what’s been called the “Era of Upscale Burgers” in 2001, chefs in America had been elevating the burger and creating unique culinary interpretations, resulting in more refined and demanding palates among burger-loving consumers. Working with the team at our restaurant support center, President, Mark Johnston and his wife, VP of Concept Development, Arlene Johnston, had a strong desire to create a restaurant that would stand out as a unique concept and satisfy those palates.
After researching and taste-testing hundreds of burgers, the team founded Burger 21 and went to work creating the restaurant’s menu, décor and culture. The first Burger 21 location opened in the Westchase area of Tampa, Fla., in November 2010 bringing people of all ages together to enjoy innovative and delicious
recipes for gourmet burgers, fries, salads, shakes and more in a modern and fun environment. From the start, it was typical to see tables filled with families of three generations engaged in conversation over Burger 21’s unique burger creations such as The Ahi Tuna, Tex-Mex Haystack and The Skinny turkey burger and signature shakes like Bananas Foster and Key Lime Pie.
On Friday afternoon Jerry and I were trying to figure out what we wanted to do for lunch. Finally after a few options, we decided on trying out Burger 21. It was our first time and I must say that the restaurant was very clean and well lit. Parking is a bit hard if you don’t know where to turn, as you have to park behind the building. It’s also not very accessible if you have someone who is handicapped or in a wheelchair.
We entered the building which is part of astrip mall. There is plenty of seating, not that you will have to worry too much. Three booths were in use when we got there. After we ordered and began to eat there were probably about 6-7 more people that came into order. The menu has a good number of options on it for everyone. There is a featured burger and shake each month. Then you have the beef burgers with names like Loaded Spud, Tex -Mex Haystack, The OMG, and Burger 101. There is also a selection of Chicken burgers, Turkey Burgers, Seafood Burgers, Veggie Burgers, and Chicken Tenders.
They also have hot dogs, slider 3 packs, and some cool side order items. Believe it or not, there are actually salads that you can order too! Jerry and I both went simple for our first time with the Burger 101. I had Bacon and American cheese on mine and Jerry had just cheddar cheese on his. The burger is accompanied by lettuce and tomato, and you can add onion if you want. Ketchup, Mustard, and Mayo on the main condiments that are offered when you order, but there are many others on the condiment bar. Each of the burgers were accompanied by french fries, which were pretty good for a fast food place.
When the burgers were served to us at our table, the guy bringing them asked us about condiments from the bar. He insisted we try a mix he made of BBQ Sauce and Ketchup because he claimed they have the best BBQ sauce in town. Jerry was not a fan of it, but I kind of liked it and used it for dipping my french fries into it. It was kind of nice to have this guy explain the mixture to us and get it for us. Our burgers were both cooked the way we like them and were nice and juicy. The flavor was good and I was very surprised at the presentation. We highly recommend checking it out and trying the different concoctions of burgers they have. Burger 21 is a great place for a quick lunch or dinner.
