Spring Chicken: 2400 N. Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale, FL, 2 other locations in Miami
NOW CLOSED Fort Lauderdale Location! So it was a Saturday night and we had no idea where we wanted to eat. So we decided to try out a new fast casual restaurant that recently opened about about a month ago. We usually like to give a new place a little bit of time to work out the kinks before trying them. First impressions is the restaurant is very nice and has a fun farm-like decor. The tables are long picnic style tables and tables that look like they would be in a farmhouse. They serve lunch and dinner or as they call it Supper. The menu is pretty simple with something called Blue Plates. Not so sure I would have called them that as it reminds me of the old Blue Plate Specials. However these are not priced like any special. You have choices of 2 piece drumsticks, two whole wings, two piece dark, two piece white, two jumbo tenders or 3 jumbo tenders. These come with french fries and coleslaw. What they don’t tell you anywhere on their menu (either the big one over the registers or the take home version) is that if you change to one of their other sides they will charge you $0.95 per side. And the person running the register doesn’t tell you about it either. To me that is just not right. You can almost miss that fact since you a paying and arm and a leg anyhow for your meal.
There is also a family style meal selection. You can add pieces of chicken to your blue plate if you want. They have a few sandwiches to choose from if you prefer that or even a salad. We opted for the 3 jumbo tenders with fries and coleslaw for one of us, and the other had the 2 piece white which included a breast and full wing with Minty Watermelon and Side Salad. You have your choice of fountain sodas, sweet or unsweet tea and water. When we picked up our food after the little buzzer vibrated telling us it was ready, we found out they forgot the salad dressing. While there picking it up there was a bunch of other people coming back because they forgot some of their orders as well or it was cold.
The jumbo tenders were okay; there wasn’t really any kind of seasoning that you could taste in the batter. Nothing special to write home about, but very expensive. The coleslaw was okay. And for a place that seems to be going for a freshly made type approach, the frozen fries should have been home made and maybe add some seasoning. I will give them an A+ on the BBQ dipping sauce though. Next we have the Fried Chicken breast and wing. Again not worth the money. The skin was nice and crispy, however it was very bland and had no flavor. It seemed like they do not like to season their breading with any spices or even marinate their chicken to give it some flavor. The Minty Watermelon though was delicious and refreshing. The side salad was a nice size and once we had the dressing it tasted great as well. One thing that was very interesting was that the manager walked around to a few tables offering them a free ice cream in a cup (looked like a small sundae), but did not offer it to everyone. To me that is a very bad decision and will turn off customers fast wondering why one table got it versus another. Oh and did we mention that for this very tasteless meal it was over $30 for fast food. I think this place will be a nicely built out restaurant for someone else to take over the space in a few months.
