Kitchen Counter Cafe
Kitchen Counter Cafe: 378 Suite 3 Railroad Street, Saint Johnsbury, Vermont
The South Florida Eats team was visiting the Northeast Kingdom and traveling around Vermont. It was getting to be after lunchtime, and Mike and I began to hear the rumblings of our stomachs. So, we set out on a search for food. The first place we stopped wasn’t open, so we searched on Google Maps and found this quaint little cafe in Saint Johnsbury called the Kitchen Counter Cafe. Luckily for us, we arrived about 30 minutes before closing and were able to feed our growling bellies.
The Restaurant:
The Kitchen Counter Cafe is a very simple setup. As you walk in the door, you will find a few booths and tables with chairs. There is nothing fancy here, but there are also not too many seats. If the restaurant is busy, you will have to wait for an open spot to sit. The decor is very dated as you walk up to the old-fashioned delicatessen case to order.
The staff at Kitchen Counter Cafe are amazing and very friendly. If you are unsure what to order, ask them, and they will give you their favorite recommendations. There is also a list of daily specials, including a daily quiche. I will say that the food was made to our liking and served extremely fast.
The Food:
Mike went with the Kitchen Counter Cafe’s classic Reuben. Served on rye bread, a healthy portion of corned beef with cheese, sauerkraut and thousand island dressing. They toasted it on the grill, just enough for the bread to crispen and the cheese to melt inside. The look on Mike’s face as he took each bite, told me that he was very happy with his selection. The side of ridged chips reminded him of being a kid again.
I went for the Kitchen Counter Cafe’s bacon cheeseburger, cooked well done. The bacon was nice and crispy, and the American cheese melted with perfection on top of the ground beef patty. They choose to provide raw onion instead of sauteed, but it didn’t change my happiness level one bit. They served a very good burger and would be something that I would consider in my top 10. The addition of the natural cut fries made it even better and was not something I expected.
