Tortilleria Mexicana
Tortilleria Mexicana: 4115 N Dixie Hwy, Oakland Park, FL 33334
Jerry and I were having cocktails at a friends house. They served us these chips with salsa, but the chips were different than any that we have had before. Jerry asked them where they got them from because he wanted to get some to have on hand. Turned out that they actually got them from Tortilleria Mexicana. I had driven past this place every day for the past several years on N. Dixie Highway. But unless you know it is there, you are going to miss it as I had been doing. Located in a small strip mall, there is a good amount of parking. The majority of their business is take-out, but there are about 6 booths and 7-8 tables. This is true authentic Mexican food. The other fun part about this restaurant is that they have a store attached to it.
The Store:
You will actually enter through the store in order to get to the restaurant. Here you can find all kinds of authentic food for Mexico and brands that you may know if you have ever been there. You will also find a large selection of fresh pastries, spices, and of course the chips that we went there for. These chips are actually a double tortilla and thicker than what you find in most restaurants or grocery stores. You can even find candy here. In the back corner is the butcher shop/deli where you can get hot dogs, fresh meat, seafood, and much more. You get so much character added to the place and it can be fun to watch people as they shop and eat.
The Restaurant:
Now onto the actual restaurant, Tortilleria Mexicana. On their menu, you will see a nice selection of appetizers, soups, tacos, and main dishes. I opted to try several of the Tacos in order to see which ones were the best and give me a bit of variety. Heck, they are only $2 each. All five of them were served on the same plate. A few things to remember, these are not going to come like the ones you get from those fast food restaurants. Their tortilla shells are small and double layered which makes them thicker than you are probably used to. It’s just cilantro and pico de gallo on them. Cheese is something that you have to ask to have added, and it is a white mexican cheese like feta almost, not the shredded kind. First up was the barbeque taco. I really enjoyed this one and wished I had waited until the end. The sauce that they used was very flavorful and it made the shredded beef taste so good. Next up was the steak taco. The steak was very tender and sliced into little pieces. My third taco was the pulled pork. I was not a fan of this one, as I felt that the pork lacked flavor and just did not taste good to me. After putting that one aside, I picked up the beef taco. I was back to happy land with the flavors from this. Finally it was time to devour the chicken taco. There was a lot of chicken in it, but I couldn’t finish the whole thing. By this time I was getting really full since we filled up on chips and guacamole. I must say that the guacamole is made fresh when you order it and we truly loved the texture of it and the taste, and Jerry is not a fan usually of guac.
Jerry went for the grilled steak. It would normally come with peppers and onions, but he only got it with tomatoes. He could not believe how much flavor the meat had and it was so very tender. Along with it comes a nice helping of yellow rice mixed with peas and carrots. The beans that came with it were different than some of the other places we normally go, but Jerry ate them down like no tomorrow. He enjoyed every bite and is looking forward to going back. The staff is very friendly and helpful. If you are not sure what something is, just ask them and they will explain it to you.
