V&S Sandwiches – PA
V&S Sandwiches: 4447 N 5th Street Hwy # A, Temple, PA 19560
Every time I travel to Reading, Pa, my family knows there will be a stop at my favorite sandwich shop, V&S. If you are in the area, you will want to make sure you stop in. There are a couple of locations, but the best one is the one located in Temple, PA, on N 5th Street Highway. I’ve been going here since I was a kid and grew up on their food. After school, on weekends, it was always a special treat to get hoagies from V&S.
The Restaurant:
V&S Sandwiches is located in a very non-descript shopping center. You could miss it if you aren’t paying attention. There happens to be a Chinese restaurant next door, just in case you prefer that. Once you step inside, you will be taken back to the 80s and 90s. The building has not changed in all of these years.
Take a number from the hook by the door, as that is how they serve you. Calling your order in ahead of time is another option, but just be prepared to call several times before they answer. This place is usually swamped, and they take in-person orders first. Cheesesteaks are so famous that the griddle always has a pile of steak cooking several inches high. A few tables are on one side for those who want to eat in, but most people take these delicious sandwiches home with them.
The Food:
My brother and I opted for our usual, the California Cheesesteak. The sirloin is cooked perfectly with onions. You can add peppers if you want, but that is not traditional and should be left off. You can also get red sauce, but this is not what a conventional cheesesteak includes. The California version adds lettuce, mayo, and tomatoes.
Everything combines for a perfect one-of-a-kind taste. I always add french fries, which I have not been able to find in any other restaurant. They have the ideal crispness to them and are always cooked to perfection. And for the locals, there is the Icy Tea that you just have to get.
