Eggspectation
Eggspectation Old Montreal: 12 Rue Notre Dame Est, Montreal, Quebec H2Y 1B7
Eggspectation is a small chain of breakfast, lunch, and dinner restaurants in Canada. The South Florida Eats team was visiting Montreal, Quebec, and looking for a quick but also good breakfast place before our local tour guide was to meet us. We asked at the W Hotel about Eggspectation, which we found online by googling, and they said that it was a good place but a chain. Chain restaurants are not overly popular in Canada, but they do exist.
This one has a few locations, so I don’t really consider it a national change, even though there are locations in both Ontario and Quebec. So Mike and I walked up a few blocks into Old Montreal. It took us a few minutes to find the restaurant as there was not very good signage leading us into the location, but we did eventually find it.
The Restaurant:
Eggspectation itself is inside one of the many commercial buildings in Old Montreal. There is a small counter/bar area on the left side as you enter through the main doors. There is an upper level to the restaurant, which is where the bathrooms are, and the main level, which is where we were seated.
Inside, there are tables and chairs as well as half-booths. We were there during the week around 10 a.m., and there was a line out the door. I would have thought that by going later, we would run into less of a wait, but boy, was I wrong.
Eggspectation Food:
The food at Eggspectation is a hodgepodge of flavors. They have Greek items, burgers, omelets, and benedicts, Italian items, sandwiches, and salads, along with entrees for dinner. We were provided a menu for Brucnh based on the time of day that we arrived.
Fresh bread was provided upon request and was warm to the touch. I had to take a picture of the basket, which was filled with all kinds of jams and spreads. They even have Nutella if you want it. After pursuing the menu for a few minutes, we ordered our drinks: a Mimosa for me and a Bloody Mary for Mike.
For our breakfast at Eggspectation, Mike went with the Montrealer omellete. This is a local favorite and includes smoked meat, as Canadians like to call it, swiss cheese, and a pickle. Lyonnaise-style potatoes accompanied his breakfast as a side item. They were nice and crunchy with good flavor. A wedge of watermelon was a refreshing addition since we were there in the middle of summer.
I went with a more traditional meat lovers omellete. Filled, with bacon, sausage and cheddar cheese, Eggspectation added the same potatoes and watermelon wedge. I was very happy with my food and would order this meal again. It was almost like I was back home. We would highly recommend checking out one of their locations the next time you are in Canada.
